Frugal Friday ~ July 6, 2018

My daughter and I downloaded the Dairy Queen app on our phones and earned a free blizzard reward. We used it during the hottest part of the day on Yard Sale Saturday.

The receipt they gave us even had a free Dilly bar for filling out the survey.

We picked up two free bottles of water while picking up an RX for my daughter.

I picked up packages of oranges, apples, and bananas for 99¢ on the reduced produce rack at Food City last week while I was in there picking up an RX for me. I always check the reduced racks when I go there.

I received a free sample of Garnier Whole Blends shampoo and conditioner in a free magazine this week.

On Monday of this week I received my first call to sub in August! I'll be glad to start earning money from school once again, although this year will be different for me.

This summer I was diagnosed with severe osteoarthritis, so I will be declining some jobs that require me to walk more than I feel capable of doing.

This week we stayed home Sunday through Wednesday and spent no money. Thursday we went thrift shopping for their 99¢ sale.

Other frugal activities this week include:

- Sold three items on Ebay for a total of $33.00/$25.54 after fees.
- Took Navy showers all week.
- We scheduled pickups with the post office this week rather than drive to the post office, which saved us gas money.
Made sure to check out the contents of my refrigerator each morning to ensure nothing goes to waste. We either eat the items for breakfast or lunch or I include them in our dinner plans.
- Washed a one gallon Ziplock bag to reuse.
- I did not buy any groceries this week and used what we had on hand instead.
- Cooked all meals at home this week.
- Used my crockpot to cook some to keep the heat out of the house and the a/c from working so hard during the heatwave.
- I perused the grocery store ads online this week and noted Food City is having a $5 sale on Friday. They have 32 ounce bags of cheese for $5, and 10 Powerades for $5 or 50¢ each.
- We signed up for the new Verizon reward program about a month or so ago. Today we earned a free $5 Starbucks reward card. I let my daughter have it as she likes Starbucks.

That's all the news for Frugal Friday around here. How was your week?

    1. I feel your pain, Sam. I spent more than I wanted to spend in June and I'm hoping to spend less in July.

    1. THank you, Sluggy. Getting older is not for the faint of heart, is it? LOL

I'll be glad to get you some cheese. Our Aldi has it for $4.99 this week too, so you might want to check if you have one close.

  4. Sounds like a great week. I love being able to use food from storage and not having to shop for a week or two.
Ditto what Sluggy said. This getting older thing is not easy. Just talk to my left knee bout it!

    1. I'm sorry you also have left knee paid, Anne. Oh, to be young again or at least have the body of a young person and the wisdom of the aged.

  7. Good job this week on your frugal accomplishments! I've done fairly well, except I did have one slip-up that really irritated me. I was getting something from the bottom shelf in the fridge and found a package of fresh snow peas that had fallen down behind a bottle of apple juice. The juice is there for when my grandkids are here, so I hadn't had reason to move it for awhile. It was only $2.98, but I still hated that it happened. I need to take a leaf from your book and keep better tabs on things.

    1. Oh, I'm sorry that happened to you, Carol. I know how frustrating that can be. I love fresh snow peas, especially in a salad or stir fry.

  8. Congrats on the sub job. Belinda, I am so sorry about the osteoarthritis. You have a sister sufferer too (me). Don't feel alone and I am here for you, truly. I love Whole Blends. It is my favorite shampoo and conditioner. I bought a conditioner tonight with a coupon.

This is scream worthy. I got an InstaPot for $5 yesterday. DH & I found it when we were thrifting. I was so excited and felt so blessed.

When I got home from shopping I cut and prepared all my fruits and veggies for the week. I was so proud of myself. I do usually buy pre-cut because of pain in my hands. I was like, I am strong girl and clever I am going to start doing this. I did it and was so proud of myself, lol. DH is going to help me find tools to help make cutting easier. He could even see how my wrist joints were reacting when using a knife.

Clearance plants galore are to be had right now in my area. I got a magnolia tree, two lilacs and my DH just insisted we need bamboo in our yard, lol. I know how that is going to go. We do amazing with our clearance plant finds. They seem to like us.

I love to journal. I find beautiful items through the week to add to my journal. Everything I found tonight was $1.00 or under. A lot was free. I am thinking of doing a blog about frugality and frugal journaling.

  9. Oh my gosh, an Instapot for $5? That is the thrift store deal of the year! Way to go! I'm so thrilled for you! Your dh is awesome, having found that and looking for tools to help you out in the kitchen. He is a keeper. :)

I would love to read a blog written by you. If you ever get started, let me know and I'll put your blog up on my side bar.

Also, we both love bamboo and are happy you found some on clearance.

  11. Hi Belinda,
Are you a Coke Rewards member? They've greatly reduced the program; it's mostly sweepstakes and such. But every now and then there are some good ones. Currently there's a deal for free magazines -- and since they don't take your credit card info, you don't have to worry about auto-renewal.

Another one, which I believe expires at the end of July, is for AMC theaters: By entering 22 codes, you receive a free movie ticket, soft drink and popcorn.

For you and anyone else who lives near an AMC theater: Wouldn't an air-conditioned movie be a nice way to beat the heat? And those free magazines make nice gifts as well as fun, free reading.

    1. Yes, an air conditioned movie theater is a great way to beat the heat.

I used to do the Coke Rewards program but quit a few years ago with one of their website updates. The site was constantly wanting me to login even after I had already logged in multiple times. It was just too much to bother with anymore, so I quit using it.
